8 Gift Ideas for Writers

We writers are easy to buy for. Basically, we'll adore just about anything that will make our writing better—or make it easier to balance writing with the rest of our lives.

Now, to make things easier here, I’ve sectioned my gift lists into those under $10 and those that cost more than $10.

Gift packages with red wrapping and white ribbons.

4 Writer Gifts for Under $10

  1. Small, pocket-sized notebooks: We need them for those on-the-go or middle-of-the-night ideas.  You can find them almost anywhere, especially office-supply shops

  2. A box of thank-you cards (or two): Yes. Even in 2025, a hand-written thank-you note counts. These are for business associates, editors, friends, book-discussion group hosts, bookstore event people and others

  3. Pens: We cannot have too many

  4. Post-it notes and index cards: Many, many (sticky) notes--preferably in different colors and sizes. Index cards are good, too

4 Writer Gifts for Over $10

  1. Blank journals:  Journals are where we do our morning pages or doodle sketches before the first draft of the essay or story or book. Also, journaling is a proven route to wellness.

  2. Craft, how-to books or workshops: Look for publications or workshops that will help your author to advance their skills or overcome a specific challenge, such as switching to a new genre, plotting a new book or balancing writing with a day job.

  3. Gift cards or vouchers for coffee shops, book shops, co-working workspaces: Many of us do our best writing or editing away from home. So these gift cards can bring a smile.

  4. A residential writers retreat: Really want to indulge and delight the writer in your life? Splurge on a gift card to a cozy guest house or a shared writers retreat. Make sure that the guest house room has a desk and good WiFi. Also ensure that the voucher’s use-by dates are open so your writer can book a time that works for them.
